The Green Knight (2021) Review

A Knight's Honor SCORE: 97 /100 Directed by: David Lowery Starring: Dev Patel, Alicia Vikander, Joel Edgerton, Sean Harris, Kate Dickie, Ralph Ineson Synopsis: A fantasy re-telling of the medieval story of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.  ****BEWARE POTENTIAL SPOILERS AHEAD**** REVIEW: Stunning, simply stunning. David Lowery has crafted the finest fantasy film since The Lord of the Rings, and proves that Arthurian legends deserve their retellings throughout history. This review is shorter than usual, because I just want all of you to go out and experience this achievement for yourself. This film has a look that says artistic realism. The outfits, weapons, locations, and world feel incredibly well-realized and unique, which helps the film stand out amongst its contemporaries. In particular, the design of the titular Green Knight is instantly recognizable, and has incredible sound design. The cinematography is incredible, offering as much unease and tension as the music and actors, ...

Jungle Cruise (2021) Review

Cruisin' On Through SCORE: 82 /100 Directed by: Jaume Collet-Serra Starring: Dwayne Johnson, Emily Blunt, Edgar Ramirez, Jack Whitehall, Jesse Plemons, Paul Giamatti Synopsis: A tramp steamer captain takes a pair of scientist siblings down the Amazon river in search of the Tree of Life Flower while evading German mercenaries.  ****BEWARE POTENTIAL SPOILERS AHEAD**** REVIEW: Let's get it out of the way, Disney hasn't had the best track records with movies based on their rides. While the Pirates movies were good for the most part, Haunted Mansion was awful and Tomorrowland was certainly mediocre. I'm happy to report that Jungle Cruise seems to have broken the curse as it were, and in a way that honors the ride as much as expanding upon it.  Following my recent reviews, let's start with the positives. The cast in this movie is simply delightful. Dwayne Johnson continues to shine as the leading man, providing ample levels of humor and action that make him endearing fro...

Snake Eyes (2021) Review

Pointless Fun, At a Cost SCORE: 59 /100 Directed by: Robert Schwentke Starring: Henry Golding, Andrew Koji, Haruka Abe, Takehiro Hira, Ursula Corbero, Samara Weaving Synopsis: A G.I. Joe spin-off centered around the character of Snake Eyes. ****BEWARE SPOILERS AHEAD**** REVIEW: I walked into Snake Eyes with no expectations. The trailer looked good, but the reviews were mixed. I can safely say that Snake Eyes is a fun yet flawed time, but is only really worth a trip to the movies if you're a fan of the G.I. Joe property. Starting with some positives, this movie has great set design and beautiful costumes. The set at the ninja castle is gorgeous, combining modern aesthetics with the ancient Japanese style. The locations used in Tokyo are also gorgeous, injecting the film with color. The costume department must have had a lot of fun making the costumes for this film, because like the sets, they exude modern and ancient stylings. Unfortunately, we don't see much of Snake Eyes' ...

Old (2021) Review

Son of a Beach Score: 71 /100  Directed by M. Night Shyamalan Starring: Gael Garcia Bernal, Vicky Krieps, Rufus Sewell, Alex Wolff, Thomasin McKenzie, Abbey Lee, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Ken Leung Synopsis:  A thriller about a family on a tropical holiday who discover that the secluded beach where they are relaxing for a few hours is somehow causing them to age rapidly reducing their entire lives into a single day. ****BEWARE POTENTIAL SPOILERS AHEAD**** REVIEW: I went into Old with the typical Shyamalan caution. Expect the worst, but you never know. Not only am I pleased to say that Old is a true return to form for Shyamalan, it's also his best film in years. That statement does come with the caveat that I haven't seen a film of his since The Last Airbender, and have not seen any of the Unbreakable films or the recent Shyamalan Renaissance films. I have only seen The Sixth Sense, The Village, The Happening, Lady in the Water, and Signs. I'd say it's better than all of them ex...

Space Jam: A New Legacy (2021) Review

Complete Airball SCORE: 3 /100 Directed by: Malcom D. Lee Starring: LeBron James, Don Cheadle, Cedric Joe, Khris Davis, Sonequa Martin-Green Synopsis: A rogue artificial intelligence kidnaps the son of famed basketball player LeBron James, who then has to work with Bugs Bunny and the other Looney Tunes to win a basketball game. ****BEWARE SPOILERS AHEAD**** REVIEW: I don't know what I was expecting from a second Space Jam film. The beautiful posters (like above) and a decent trailer had me second guessing that this film would've been at least mediocre. After watching the original for the first time only recently, and finding it mediocre, I thought this had nowhere to go but up. But I was DEAD WRONG. Not only is this film a two hour advertisement (yes you read that correctly, two hours), it is completely devoid of logic, fun, and sidelines its own characters in favor of nothing but references.  However, before I dive into my heavy critique of the film, I'd like to point out...
