REVIEW:

Netflix has finally released The Harder They Fall, and I'm glad to say it's a good, not great, western. While it may not be the most original or captivating story, it does more than enough to distance itself from its contemporaries.

The biggest positive for this film is its cast. Everyone here is clearly having the time of their lives, and it shows. Jonathan Majors continues to be an incredible lead, Lakeith Stanfield is impressive with his range as always, and Idris Elba is a fantastic villain as always. Regina Hall is flat out intimidating, and Zazie Beetz is always fun to watch. It's really the cast that sells the world and the story, and they do a magnificent job.

Director Jeymes Samuel has crafted a beautiful-looking film that uses color exceptionally well. When in the town of Redwood, there's color everywhere, and a particular fight sequence in a clothing store uses color so vividly. It is really funny when they arrive in a white town, and literally everything is white. All of the buildings, all of the interiors, even the dirt ground outside is white. There's a message to be had there, and it's so well done. The style of this film is also very differentiating. It feels similar to a Tarantino film when it comes to using pop music during the film (but never in a bad way) and its violence, but it also feels fresh and new.

As for the story, it's a little boring. It's your standard western revenge film, and plays on the tropes of the genre. You can clearly tell that Samuel is a massive fan of westerns, but he can't really take the film past being a standard western story. It's a little disappointing that both the director or the cast could elevate this into something more. While it's never so boring that you don't care, it feels more formulaic western than I would have anticipated, and through that I feel like it starts to lose any sort of status as a true original for the genre.

The Harder They Fall is a fun western with an impeccable cast and sense of style, and is totally worth your time. It's fresh enough that it's not boring, but does manage to have its story feel disappointingly familiar. If you have a Netflix subscription, I do recommend it as something to watch this week!

Conclusion: While it feels like a standard western revenge movie, The Harder They Fall is bolstered by its incredible cast and an awesome style that lifts it well above mediocrity.

Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) Review

Multiversal Mania SCORE: 86 /100 Directed by: Jon Watts Starring: Tom Holland, Zendaya, Benedict Cumberbatch, Alfred Molina, Willem Dafoe, Jamie Foxx, Marisa Tomei, Synopsis: With Spider-Man's identity now revealed, Peter asks Doctor Strange for help. When a spell goes wrong, dangerous foes from other worlds start to appear, forcing Peter to discover what it truly means to be Spider-Man. ****THERE WILL BE NO SPOILERS IN THIS REVIEW**** REVIEW: I will reiterate that I will not have ANY spoilers in this review, as to maintain the theater experience for all who may read this. No Way Home is the best Spider-Man film in the MCU, there's no doubt about it. It's darker, more emotional, and features some of the best performances from these characters yet. However, I do think it has a few glaring issues, most of which I can't discuss due to spoilers.  I'll start with my critiques I CAN discuss. The first act of this movie definitely feels rushed. It's almost like they wa...

The Last Duel (2021) Review

The Truth at Last SCORE: 82 /100 Directed by: Ridley Scott Starring: Jodie Comer, Matt Damon, Adam Driver Synopsis: King Charles VI declares that Knight Jean de Carrouges settle his dispute with his squire by challenging him to a duel. ****BEWARE POTENTIAL SPOILERS AHEAD**** REVIEW: The Last Duel is a return to form for Ridley Scott. His previous historical films have been either good or horribly miscast, good being Gladiator and bad being Exodus: Gods and Kings. I'm happy to say that, while not perfect, The Last Duel is among his better historical films.  Ridley Scott has crafted a great-looking and relevant film that has an incredibly interesting structure. The film is told through three perspectives, Matt Damon's Jean, Adam Driver's Jacques, and Jodie Comer's Marguerite. All three stories vary in their accuracy, which accounts for a lot of the uncertainty the audience feels regarding the story. While some audience members may feel that this is repetitive, it's ac...

Skinamarink (2023) Review

Pure Nightmare Material SCORE: 97 /100 Directed by: Kyle Edward Ball Starring: Lucas Paul, Dali Rose Tetreault, Ross Paul Synopsis: Two children wake up in the middle of the night to find their father is missing, and all the windows and doors in their home have vanished. ****I WILL DO MY BEST, BUT BEWARE POTENTIAL SPOILERS AHEAD**** REVIEW: Quick Note: This film is not for everyone. The film is experimental, artistic, and genuinely trying to do something new. Whenever this happens not everyone will be on board, and that's fine. We can't just sit content with what we have, and I give all the power to filmmakers who try to push the envelope. I've never been so terrified by a movie in recent memory like I was with Skinamarink. Its unconventional nature and pacing really throw you off after a first time viewing, and lend to its unnerving nature.  Before I continue, I must divulge that I am already a fan of "analog horror" content online. I highly recommend Gemini Home...
