Catching Up (Week Ending 2/20/22)

Hello again! This catching up will be a little shorter than usual, since it was a busy week, but there are some interesting inclusions on here. Let's start with the films reviewed on the podcast this week! Jumanji (1995) REVIEWED ON PODCAST SCORE: 67 /100  Directed By: Joe Johnston Starring: Robin Williams, Bonnie Hunt, and Kirsten Dunst Synopsis: When two kids find and play a magical board game, they release a man trapped in it for decades - and a host of dangers that can only be stopped by finishing the game. Quick Review: While its nostalgia status and Robin William's performance are clear winners, the film definitely starts to show its age, and isn't as fun as I remember.  If you'd like to watch it, it's available on Netflix. Zathura (2005) REVIEWED ON PODCAST SCORE: 46 /100  Directed By: Jon Favreau Starring: Josh Hutcherson, Jonah Bobo, Dax Shepard Synopsis: Two young brothers are drawn into an intergalactic adventure when their house is hurled t...

Catching Up (Week Ending 2/13/22)

Hello there! Good morning, good afternoon, and good evening whenever you're reading this! This week had only one film reviewed on the podcast, and a couple of others throughout the week. This week really ran rampant with the types of films I watched, as well as scores. In addition, I posted two new release reviews earlier that you can check out for Nightmare Alley and Jackass Forever! As always, let's start with the film I reviewed on the podcast this week. Valentine's Day (2010) REVIEWED ON PODCAST SCORE: 2 /100  Directed By: Garry Marshall Starring: Ashton Kutcher, Jessica Biel, Taylor Swift Synopsis: Intertwining couples and singles in Los Angeles break-up and make-up based on the pressures and expectations of Valentine's Day. Quick Review: Valentine's Day makes me want to die alone, as nothing in this movie is realistic, the situations are forced, and it's the only movie I've ever had to watch in chunks because I couldn't take it.  If you'd like ...

Nightmare Alley (2021) Review

Absolutely Mental SCORE: 85 /100 Directed by: Guillermo del Toro Starring: Bradley Cooper, Cate Blanchett, Toni Collette Synopsis: An ambitious carny with a talent for manipulating people with a few well-chosen words hooks up with a female psychiatrist who is even more dangerous than he is. ****BEWARE POTENTIAL SPOILERS AHEAD**** REVIEW: I was very excited going into Guillermo del Toro's latest film, as it seemed to be right in line with his previous work. After watching the film I can safely say that he still has his touch of making a masterful film, but this one has a little of that magic missing that made Pan's Labyrinth and The Shape of Water so special. This is an adaptation of an earlier book by William Lindsay Gresham, as well as a sort of remake of the 1947 film of the same name. Using those as a framework, del Toro is able to expand and add his signature flair to the story, which allows the awesome story to be accompanied by his inspired visuals. The carnival is a mixt...

Jackass Forever (2022) Review

Exactly What we Needed SCORE:  92 /100 Directed by: Jeff Tremaine Starring: Johnny Knoxville, Steve-O, Chris Pontius Synopsis: After 11 years, the Jackass crew is back for their final crusade. ****BEWARE POTENTIAL SPOILERS AHEAD**** REVIEW: I wholeheartedly agree with my fellow critics when they say that Jackass Forever is the movie we needed at this moment in time. Will it change the landscape of cinema as we know it? No. Will it alter the course of the pandemic? No. What it will do though? Provide much needed and earned laughter is its attendants.  If by some miracle you aren't aware of what the Jackass films are, it's actor and stuntman Johnny Knoxville and his buddies putting themselves through the craziest stunts and the most insane pranks. This time around the crew has some new blood to throw into the grinder, and every new cast member brings a level of commitment as well as heart to the crew. My one critique is that the film is a bit too short for my liking. I woul...

Catching Up (Week Ending 2/6/22)

Hello Everyone! Another week has passed, and there's a few movies to add to the list! There's a franchise on here that received a new addition in theaters this weekend, as well as a couple other films. Let's start with the films we reviewed on the podcast. The Dark Crystal (1982) REVIEWED ON PODCAST SCORE: 52 /100  Directed By: Jim Henson, Frank Oz Starring: Jim Henson, Kathryn Mullen, Frank Oz Synopsis: On another planet in the distant past, a Gelfling embarks on a quest to find the missing shard of a magical crystal, and to restore order to his world. Quick Review: With its beautiful production design, puppeteering, and voice acting, it's a shame that the film isn't quite as interesting or engaging as it wants to be.  If you'd like to watch it, it's available on HBO Max. The Objective (2008) REVIEWED ON PODCAST SCORE: 24 /100  Directed By: Daniel Myrick Starring: Jonas Ball, Matthew R. Anderson, Jon Huertas Synopsis: A military special oper...
